Accountability is not punishment. It is the bridge between where you are and where you said you wanted to go.

Most people have a complicated relationship with accountability. They want the results that come from it but resist the process of it. Because somewhere along the way accountability got confused with blame. With criticism. With being wrong or not enough or failing to measure up.

Real accountability is none of those things. It is simply the practice of telling the truth about where you are in relation to where you said you wanted to be, without drama and without self-destruction. Just honest, clear-eyed assessment followed by a decision about what comes next.

The people who grow fastest are not the ones who never fall short. They are the ones who can look at falling short without making it mean something catastrophic about who they are. They can say this is where I am, this is not where I said I would be, here is what I am going to do differently, and then actually do it.

That is accountability. Not a weapon. A compass. It keeps pointing you back toward the life you said you wanted to build, even when the path veers off. Especially then.
